Somatic Therapy

"Trauma is not just in the mind, it lives in the body. To heal trauma, we must listen to the wisdom of the body. Somatic therapy helps us reconnect with our bodies and release the tension stored within."

Bessel Van Der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score

Providing a holistic approach to therapy.

Somatic therapy is a type of body-centred therapy that focuses on the connection between the mind and body, combining talk therapy with physical techniques for a more holistic approach to healing.

The mind and body are closely linked, even if it’s not always obvious. Our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations are all interconnected and can influence one another in profound ways.

When talk therapy reaches its limits, somatic therapy goes deeper by addressing the physical sensations in the body—an often overlooked area in traditional therapy. This includes exploring insights from gestures, posture, facial expressions, eye movements, and overall body language, as well as how energy flows through the body, where tension or resistance is held, and where discomfort is stored. Somatic therapy aims to uncover emotional triggers and memories held within the body, helping to bring awareness, acceptance, and understanding to these sensations. This process can ease tension, promote emotional resilience, and facilitate healing.

In somatic therapy, the process typically starts with talking through the issues, and then adds tools like hands-on holistic treatments (such as Reiki), visualisations, mindfulness practices, and coaching to release both physical and emotional discomfort.
